The new (rebuilt) Celica 5-speed tranny from Anaheim Gear came in and we are getting closer to the conversion. I did some gear ratio comparisons to estimate what the new RPM vs. MPH relationships should be and have come up with the following (this is all based on the new 175 / 70 / 13 tires and the existing original differential ratio of 3.27):

With Original GT6 4-speed tranny

  • 1st gear ratio = 2.646
  • 2nd gear ratio = 1.779
  • 3rd gear ratio = 1.254
  • 4th gear ratio = 1.0
  • At 60 MPH in 4th gear RPM = 2912
  • At 70 MPH in 4th gear RPM = 3398
  • At 80 MPH in 4th gear RPM = 3883
  • At 95 MPH in 4th gear RPM = 4611

With the new Celica 5-speed tranny

  • 1st gear ratio = 3.285
  • 2nd gear ratio = 1.894
  • 3rd gear ratio = 1.275
  • 4th gear ratio = 1.0
  • 5th gear ratio = 0.783
  • At 60 MPH in 5th gear RPM = 2388
  • At 70 MPH in 5th gear RPM = 2786
  • At 80 MPH in 5th gear RPM = 3184
  • At 95 MPH in 5th gear RPM = 3781

Based on the above the car should be a little quicker to 60 MPH from a standing start and much more comfortable (from an RPM perspective) on the highway. The conversion kit includes the following (along with the Celica tranny);

  • New tranny mounts and brackets
  • New clutch disk and alignment tool
  • New pilot bushing and sleeve
  • New Hydraulic clutch release throw out bearing with steel braided hoses
